You know, I was thinking. The covenant only landed in a very small segment of Africa. How come the other continents didn’t just launch some ICBMs at the landing zone?
Go to the sword room on The Pit and look at the screens in the room. Some of the images (I think they cycle) should show a global map with a few yellow dots and bigger white circles on it. I believe this is an invasion map. Otherwise, as Miranda Keyes says “Casualties from the subsequent orbital bombardment were…extreme”. Also, other cities are revealed to have been attacked in that series of comics/graphic novels that are supposed to bridge Halo 2 and 3.
